Associate Professor of Economics & Strategy
Rady School of Management
University of California, San Diego
I am an Associate Professor of Economics and Strategy at the Rady School of Management at UCSD and a Faculty Research Fellow at the NBER.
I use experiments to address questions about how economic theory can predict behavior in the areas of education, philanthropy and health. I co-founded the Science of Philanthropy Initiative - a $5m project that brings together academics and charities to revolutionize our understanding of how we do philanthropy. Over the past 15 years, I have managed CHECC, a large-scale education experiment that follows 2,000 families who received different early childhood programs. In 2020, I was the recipient of the Vernon L. Smith Ascending Scholar Prize.
I have published over 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals and have been featured in media outlets such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Today.com, NPR and the Freakonomics podcast.

With 10 practical tips for successful experiments, we predict that the study of children’s economic behavior will be a major growth area in social science as researchers recognize kids as active participants in markets.
